Stranded cottons
To get your strands looking smooth when stitched - separate the strands and then put back together the required number of threads.

Stranded viscose/silk
Stranded viscose gives a lustrous sheen, but can be a bit of a nightmare when stitching with it. Try moistening it a little on the tongue to help the strands stay together while stitching.

Threading a needle
Do you find it difficult trying to push the thread through the eye of a needle? Instead, hold the thread between your fore finger and thumb so the thread is barely showing, and push the eye of the needle over the thread.

French Knots
My tip for knoting after threading a needle. I find it very easy to make a french knot and pulling it all the way through to the end without stopping. Grab hold of the thread as it leaves the needle with the ends of the finger nail.

Embroidery hoops
Fabric can become loose in the hoop and can leave a mark on the fabric. To reduce both of these things happening, wrap thin cotton tape around the rings so that the tape just overlaps. A few stitches will secure the tape in place where the ends meet.
